The Blending of Genres

Okay, so I've noticed the blending of genres a lot in books lately. One I’m really looking forward to is Natalie Whipple’s TRANSPARENT, which was “pitched as X-Men meets The Godfather, in which an invisible girl has to stop her dad – an infamous crime lord – from ruining her life.
This is science fiction, as the invisibility comes from a radioactive pill the population was forced to take during the Cold War. And it’s paranormal, because the pill caused a paranormal thing. And it’s YA contemporary. And it sounds brilliant.
I’ve seen more and more books like this, with a blending of fantasy and paranormal, or science fiction and paranormal, or even all three.
And I’m a fan.
My series, which began with POSSESSION last year and continues with SURRENDER (out this past June), combines the paranormal with science fiction and dystopian elements. The Thinkers in my “all-good” government are in control of the population because they have a paranormal ability to read minds, see the future, influence others with by simply speaking, or manipulate technology.
In SURRENDER, I expanded the paranormal abilities to include sensing another’s emotions, controlling the elements, and even the simple act of touching. I loved merging those powers with the super-techy elements of gadgets and electronics, as well as weaving it into a society that accepts both the paranormal and the advanced technology as normal.
It’s been super-fun to write, and I hope readers have found it enjoyable to read.
