1. What inspired you to write Fractured Light?
The idea came to me when I was doing a writing exercise with a friend out of a book we'd both purchased (yeah, I'm nerdy like that.). I wrote of a girl at her father's funeral. She had such blond, almost white, hair that she looked like a ghost in the cemetery, but as I wrote about her, I felt her strength and I just knew I had to keep telling her story. There was so much she wanted to tell the world.
2. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Honestly, I just want to give readers the chance to escape into another world for a few hours of their life. But if while in this world, they discover a message, I hope it's "use your own brain to determine what you believe and fight for it."
3. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I see bits and pieces of me in them all. I like to think I'm a fighter, like Llona, and, like Christian, I respect and honor my beliefs. As for May, I try to be as accepting and understanding to everyone I meet. And Matt for his love of literature.
4. What character intrigued you the most as the author? And why?
It was Llona. She really was a mystery to me, and of all the characters, she spoke to me the most. She wanted so hard to be the strong person she felt she was inside, but her past and certain stigma's held her back.
5. Do you have any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
The sequel to Fractured Light will be out in a year, and the third and final book to the series, shortly after that. I also have a humurous parenting memoire that will be out Mother's Day of 2013. In addition, I'm just finishing up another book that's sort of a YA Jekyl and Hyde. I'm looking forward to this one. My future is full of writing, but, like every mother in the world, I need more time.
6. If you could co-author a book with any author who would it be?
Alden Bell or James Dashner. Both know how to write well and pace a story.
7. If you could live in any book which one would it be?
I would love, love, love to live in Harry Potter and I would best friends with them all.
8. If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old what advice would you give her?
I'd tell her one thing: Do not let insecurities that someone else caused control her. Be the hero not the victim. It took me awhile to learn this.
9. What is the one quote that inspires you above all others?
There are so many, but the one I really love is: If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.

Blurb: I’m dying, I thought. This was unexpected and not at all how I envisioned my death. I was supposed to die gardening in a flowerbed as a hundred-year-old woman, not as a seventeen-year-old trapped in a lake beneath inches of ice.
Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. She can’t take any chances. But when she starts to make friends for the first time in her life, she gets careless and lets her guard down. Big mistake.
As an Aura, Llona can manipulate light and harness its energy. But if she wants to survive, Llona will have to defy the Auran Council and learn to use her power as a weapon against the Vyken whose sole desire is to take her light. Now she’s caught in something even bigger than she can understand, with a power she can’t wield, and no one she can trust, except, just maybe, a mysterious stranger.
In this breathtaking and romantic adventure, Rachel McClellan delivers a truly mesmerizing story that will keep you guessing to the very end.

ReplyDeleteGreat interview and I too love Alden Bell.
ReplyDeleteMy fav books are fantasy romance or historical romance & I get teased by some of my friends about how improbable the books are but that's exactly why I like these genres. It's the escapism aspect.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this giveaway! This book looks so interesting! I like supporting debut authors and am fascinated with the main character's ability to manipulate light!

ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to share with us this interview today. Fractured Light sounds new and different and I am looking forward to reading it. I love that you have a sequel coming, as my favorite reads do not end at book one :)
ReplyDelete"Be the hero not the victim"
ReplyDeleteI love that! I wish more people thought like that. It's great advice!
Love the interview, and I agree that living at Hogwarts would be terrific! I, too, see a bit of myself in every character I write. I think that most authors do. Thanks again :)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win this book, but the fact that it is autographed is amazing! I actually realized when I entered this that I do not have one single autographed book! This would be my first! Thank you for the chance to win it! =)

Thanks! =)
I love that it's autographed! It's my favorite way to get a book. I think this book sounds amazing! I love imagining I am the main character in a book. If an author can't make me feel that usually the book isn't good to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
